Have you ever noticed that no matter what you do in life, you are always your own worst critic? Even when accomplishments are made and goals are reached, it sometimes seems that it could have been better in some way. September is known as Self Improvement Month, so why not take the time to work on yourself in some small way, even if it is simply squashing that little feeling of not being good enough. At Deptford Skating & Fun Center in Westville, New Jersey, we have a few ideas about how you can make the most out of Self Improvement Month.
At DSC we can offer roller skating lessons and public skating sessions if you are interested in improving your skills or in improving your health for Self Improvement Month! As with any skill or hobby, the more you do something, the better you typically get at it over time. So if you have been a little worried about going roller skating lately because you do not feel you do it well (or at all), take the month of September to really try it! Ask a friend who knows how to skate to come help you at the rink; you can also learn more about the skate lessons DSC offers if you want private instruction.
If you are interested in getting a little healthier this month, roller skating is also known for being an amazing, low-impact sport! Skating is considered a great aerobic activity and is a fun way of getting in your weekly cardio, as opposed to running on a treadmill!
Roller Hockey, Artistic Figure Skating, Roller Derby and even Jam Skating, are just a few of the types of roller sports available to those interesting in a more competitive roller skating experience. Even if you don’t choose a roller sport, any kind of team sport can greatly help with your personal self improvement, as you will be surrounded by others who can help you try to always become a better you!
Breaking it Down
An easy way to change and make self improvements stick, is to take it a little at a time. People used to say that only took 21 days to break old habits and make healthy changes; however, experts now realize that this ‘magic number’ greatly varies by individual. So for September, why not start small? Break it down week by week. Let’s say becoming more healthy is your overall goal, with roller skating and food choices being how you want to make this change. Make a weekly plan:
- Week #1 – Skate for 30 minutes; drink water with every meal.
- Week #2 – Skate for 30 minutes; drink water with every meal; add more fruit and veggies to meals.
- Week #3 – Skate for 30 minutes 2x; drink water with every meal; add more fruit and veggies to meals.
- Week #4 – Skate for 30 minutes 2x; drink water with every meal; add more fruit and veggies; limit fast food on weekdays.
Of course simple changes can be even more gradual than this, like switching from caffeinated coffee or tea to decaf, white sugar to raw sugar, sodas with meals to water with meals. No matter what you choose for Self Improvement Month, just be sure it is something you really want to do/change and that you make the tasks gradual and small enough to not have that critical feeling in you head discourage you from succeeding! Believe that you can do it and try your hardest!
