Getting kids between the ages of 7 and 9 years old active for at least 70 minutes day improves thinking skills, compared to kids who don’t move as much. This research, developed by the University of Illinois, supports the mantra of parents everywhere who want their kids to step away from the computer screens, and into some fun. The study examined an after-school program called Fitness Improves Thinking in Kids (FITKids) which provided students with a snack, a health lesson, and 70 minutes of exercise via a variety of activities, with the focus on fun rather than competition. Results showed that the active play helped kids develop higher level cognitive skills.
It’s no secret that most kids in America today are not getting enough physical activity in their days due to a number of factors, including schools slashing physical education programs, parents afraid to let their kids play alone outside, and the ubiquity of technology- video games, TV, social media, etc. Parents know that their kids need to be more active, but they may not know how to go about improving their family’s routines.
