Deptford Skating and Fun Center hopes that you are having a wonderful summer and that you have been able to participate in some of our great public skating session events, in our fun summer camp or at least have grabbed some cool treats at DSC Ice Cream! While a lot of what we talk about at DSC is FUN, we also want to make sure everyone is aware that roller skating is really more than that. Roller skating is a sport, just like running or swimming, though many may only consider it a recreational activity. While only skating for fun is, well…fun; it is also a FANTASTIC exercise for your body!!!
The President’s Council for Physical Fitness and the American Heart Association both recommend roller skating for health and the RSA (The Roller Skating Association) have made an excellent infographic to show some of the health facts for this great sport. Some great points they make about roller skating include the following:
- Roller skating for just 30 minutes produces a heart rate of at least 148 beats per minute.
- The average person can burn up to 600 calories with just one hour of vigorous roller skating at 10 miles per hour.
- Roller skating causes 50% less stress to joints than running.
Check out this excellent RSA Infographic below:
It may seem odd to think about roller skating being safer than a jungle gym or even basketball, but the statistics show that it really is. Of course, if you go “extreme roller skating” outdoors, trying all kinds of tricks without safety equipment, we are sure these stats would not be accurate. However, for the average roller skating child or adult, this sport is safer than most, fun, and full of ways to change it up (like our theme skates and events).
Please stop by DSC for one of our public skate sessions to ‘get your workout on’ sometime! Fun exercise is the best kind of exercise!
